Opening our Hearts to Culture
PASC Bhajans Do It AgainArticle by Priya Mistry, Corona:
September 9 was a night to sing with your heart and dance until the soles of your feet swelled with blisters. The PASC bhajan night at the Ram Kabir Mandir in Carson city was another successful event for the year 2006. Our Bhajan night was a great evening to catch up with friends and family in melodious bhajans that seemed to reverberate the building. The voices of the old and young blended with the toe tapping rhythms of the tabla, played by our very own president, as well as the chiming sound of manjiras. Two hours seemed to fly by as each individual gave all their enthusiasm singing both familiar and new bhajans. The singing and chanting was very enjoyable and kept the night energized. After the aarti, the dinner served was this year sponsored by the families of Valliben D. Lad and Laxmiben M. Mistry. The meal was savory and gave the right kind of boost for the night ahead.
In a matter of no time, dancers in their colorful skirts and glittering jewelry began the garbas. From children to teens and adults to grandparents, each circle contained a variety of people whose sweaty faces and blistered soles made the night authentic. However, when it came to Raas, participants were innumerable. The ever enjoyable raas was composed of both the regular and twelve-step dandia dance that lasted until our night’s end. It was culture wrapped into one night- a mixed masala of singing, dancing, and worshipping. I’m sure many will agree that PASC bhajans only get better and better as the years pass by!
